Design Considerations of ultra low power radios for the IoT

In 2008 the number of "things" connected to the internet surpassed the number of people living on earth and by 2020 the number of "things" is predicted to reach beyond 50 billion on the way to trillions. The potential for IoT and its ubiquitous computing reality is staggering, but limited in present day by many technical challenges. This talk will focus on one of those design challenges which is the need for scalable ultra low power radios in the presence of significant network congestion. Several topics will be discussed that aim to ease, but not remove, this conflict including asymmetry in the link budget, duty cycling, low power modes in standard compliant radios, and novel radio architectures like wake-up receivers.
