Advances in Analog Linearization for Satellite Communications

The need for the transmission of information at ever greater data rates is transforming the architecture of communications satellites. The use of matrix amplification, phased arrays and multibeam designs are becoming common. These new satellites will still need linear power amplifiers (PAs) but at wider bandwidths to allow the efficient transmission of information. This paper discusses progress in advancing the state of the art of satellite PA linearization. The use of analog predistortion (PD) at both microwave and new millimeter-wave bands is discussed, and the characteristics of flight linearizers in development for these new PA applications described.
