Millimeter wave beamforming: System level challenges and implications for RF design

The focus of this talk is three-fold. It first provides a contextual background in terms of both theory and standards evolution to millimeter wave beamforming techniques considered in 5G-NR. It then studies the performance of the proposed beamforming techniques with reasonable assumptions on channel state information, processing and RF constraints based on the evolving 3GPP spec and the gap to ideal/optimal performance. It finally considers how this performance gap can be bridged and what it broadly means for RF evolution for practical millimeter wave systems.
