A Single-Chip Remotely Powered Transceiver with an Embedded Temperature Sensor

A single-chip remotely-powered wireless transceiver with an embedded temperature sensor and a miniature antenna is implemented in the 950 MHz UHF frequency band using GlobalFoundries’ 45 nm CMOS SOI technology. With antenna, temperature sensor, ADC, modulator and demodulator integrated on a single chip, the system consumes only 120 µW of harvested power with an area of 0.7 mm × 0.8 mm, which makes it one of the smallest wireless temperature sensing transceiver. The uplink data rate is 312.5 kbps with a 10 MHz system clock generated using an on-chip digitally controlled oscillator. The temperature sensor is measured over a range of 20 °C to 100 °C with a sensing accuracy of +0.7 to -1 °C.
